You've done the thinking. We're here to help you prepare — clearly, honestly, and at your own pace.
The Nurse Psychotherapist Certificate — Specialization in Trauma Recovery is a 12-month program for regulated nurses preparing to practise psychotherapy with depth, integrity, and cultural accountability. Before you apply, here's what to know.
Built for RNs, CNSs, and NPs holding current Canadian registration — and grounded in the recognition that the workforce of trauma‑responsive care is nursing and allied health, working together.
Eight didactic courses plus a 1,000-hour supervised practicum. A three-day in-person intensive in Brampton anchors the Becoming Method®. The rest is blended online — synchronous and asynchronous, designed for working clinicians.
Graduates leave with the Safe and Effective Use of Self competency, trauma-informed assessment and treatment planning, and the relational and ethical grounding required to enter independent psychotherapeutic practice.
We've designed our admissions process to be selective, transparent, and human. Here is everything required at the time of application.
Current, unrestricted registration as an RN, CNS, or NP with a Canadian provincial or territorial nursing regulatory body, in good standing.
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution. If you don't hold a BScN, our PLAR pathway (next section) considers your full professional formation.
No current, pending, or unresolved regulatory proceedings that would restrict participation in supervised psychotherapeutic practice.
Your professional interest in psychotherapeutic nursing practice, your clinical experience, your motivation, and a candid reflection on your readiness for the formation this program asks of you.
From regulated health professionals or academic supervisors who can speak to your clinical competence, professional conduct, and readiness for advanced training. Personal or peer references are not accepted.
Demonstrated through your statement, your references, and an admissions interview — a genuine commitment to engaging in your own healing alongside the development of clinical skill.
Advanced nursing knowledge is built through many legitimate pathways — not only through formal degree programs. Our Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process is conducted in full alignment with CRPO PLAR guidelines and considers your full professional formation.
PLAR approval establishes eligibility for admission consideration. Final acceptance still depends on the same admissions review every applicant undergoes.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Each step must be complete for your file to move into Admissions Committee review.
Create your account at enrollbecominginstitute.ca and begin your file. Returning applicants sign in to pick up where they left off.

500–750 words. Tell us why this work, why now, and what you bring. We read every statement carefully — it matters.
Regulated health professionals or academic supervisors. They will receive a request from us directly once you submit their contact information.
A non-refundable application fee finalizes your submission. Once payment is confirmed, you'll receive an email receipt and your application moves into Admissions Committee review.
Before you apply, you're welcome to book a 30‑minute advisory call with Dr.‑Joan Samuels‑Dennis. We'll talk about your background, your goals, and whether this program is the right next step for you. No pressure — just an honest conversation.
Our Admissions Committee reviews every complete file with care. Here is what to expect once your application is in.
The Admissions Committee reviews complete applications. If anything is missing, our team reaches out directly.
