You've done the thinking. We're here to help you prepare — clearly, honestly, and at your own pace.

Before You Apply

A program designed for the practitioner you are becoming.

The Nurse Psychotherapist Certificate — Specialization in Trauma Recovery is a 12-month program for regulated nurses preparing to practise psychotherapy with depth, integrity, and cultural accountability. Before you apply, here's what to know.

Who it is for

Registered nurses ready for psychotherapeutic formation.

Built for RNs, CNSs, and NPs holding current Canadian registration — and grounded in the recognition that the workforce of trauma‑responsive care is nursing and allied health, working together.

What the year asks of you

12 months · three semesters · 1,737.5 hours.

Eight didactic courses plus a 1,000-hour supervised practicum. A three-day in-person intensive in Brampton anchors the Becoming Method®. The rest is blended online — synchronous and asynchronous, designed for working clinicians.

What you graduate ready to do

Practise psychotherapy with safety, dignity, and depth.

Graduates leave with the Safe and Effective Use of Self competency, trauma-informed assessment and treatment planning, and the relational and ethical grounding required to enter independent psychotherapeutic practice.

What You'll Need Ready

A clear checklist — so you can prepare with confidence.

We've designed our admissions process to be selective, transparent, and human. Here is everything required at the time of application.

  • Active nursing registration

Current, unrestricted registration as an RN, CNS, or NP with a Canadian provincial or territorial nursing regulatory body, in good standing.

  • A BScN — or equivalent through PLAR

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution. If you don't hold a BScN, our PLAR pathway (next section) considers your full professional formation.

  • Professional standing in good order

No current, pending, or unresolved regulatory proceedings that would restrict participation in supervised psychotherapeutic practice.

  • A personal statement (500–750 words)

Your professional interest in psychotherapeutic nursing practice, your clinical experience, your motivation, and a candid reflection on your readiness for the formation this program asks of you.

  • Two professional references

From regulated health professionals or academic supervisors who can speak to your clinical competence, professional conduct, and readiness for advanced training. Personal or peer references are not accepted.

  • Readiness for psychotherapeutic formation

Demonstrated through your statement, your references, and an admissions interview — a genuine commitment to engaging in your own healing alongside the development of clinical skill.

Without a BScN

Your experience counts.

Advanced nursing knowledge is built through many legitimate pathways — not only through formal degree programs. Our Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process is conducted in full alignment with CRPO PLAR guidelines and considers your full professional formation.

PLAR approval establishes eligibility for admission consideration. Final acceptance still depends on the same admissions review every applicant undergoes.

PLAR portfolio includes
  • A detailed chronological CV documenting all relevant professional experience and credentials.
  • Verified evidence of continuing education, certifications, or structured development in psychotherapeutic, psychiatric, or mental health nursing.
  • A critical reflective narrative of 750–1,000 words on your preparation, formation, and readiness for supervised psychotherapeutic practice.
  • Any additional supporting documentation identified by the Admissions Committee.
The Application

Six steps, in order — nothing hidden.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Each step must be complete for your file to move into Admissions Committee review.

02

Verify your nursing registration

03

Submit transcripts — or your PLAR portfolio

04

Write your personal statement

500–750 words. Tell us why this work, why now, and what you bring. We read every statement carefully — it matters.

05

A non-refundable application fee finalizes your submission. Once payment is confirmed, you'll receive an email receipt and your application moves into Admissions Committee review.
