Canada's only graduate-level pathway from Registered Nurse to Registered Psychotherapist.
A 12-month, CNA-accredited certificate program preparing dual-credentialed nurse psychotherapists specializing in trauma recovery.
Grounded in the Becoming Method® and aligned with CRPO, CNO, and CNA standards, the program prepares incumbent Registered Nurses for the work Canada urgently needs—across hospitals, community health, mental health services, and private practice.
A direct response to two of Canada's most acute workforce shortages.
Canada faces a critical need for specialized, trauma-competent mental health care. This pathway provides incumbent Registered Nurses with advanced education, clinical supervision, and specialized framework training to expand their practice in trauma recovery—qualified, regulated, and prepared to lead.
The Becoming Method® — trauma recovery through truth, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
Distilled from twenty years of clinical inquiry, The Becoming Method® integrates the convergent insights of trauma pioneers—including van der Kolk, Levine, Porges, Diamond, Hawkins, and Blakely—into a teachable, supervisable methodology.
Every module is grounded in this phase-based framework, equipping nurses to deliver regulator-aligned trauma care across Canada.
Truth
Disciplined witnessing of what occurred, what was lost, and what adaptations were required to survive.
Forgiveness
Unraveling inherited contracts and ancestral burdens to restore internal coherence, agency, and authenticity.
Reconciliation
Reintegration of self, relationship, and community—returning to meaningful connection across personal and systemic fields.
"Psychological safety is not the absence of difficulty. It is the disciplined, regulated, ethically grounded presence within which lasting recovery becomes possible."

A practice-based framework for accountable RN–Psychotherapist practice.
The Becoming Institute publishes a complete Practice Standards & Competencies framework that articulates the knowledge, skill, judgment, and ethical responsibilities required of Registered Nurses engaged in psychotherapeutic practice. The framework is designed to protect the public, clarify professional accountability, support advanced nursing practice, and align fully with the regulatory expectations of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
Why we authored our own standard. While regulatory colleges provide foundational generalist standards, specialized psychotherapy demands advanced clinical depth. We authored this framework to sit well above the generalist standard—reflecting three decades of advancement in trauma science, polyvagal theory, and the urgent ethical work of decolonizing therapy.
The Becoming Institute’s Practice Standards & Competencies framework was developed to meet that bar—an explicit, accountable standard for the RN–Psychotherapist role as it is actually practiced.

Psychotherapy is a science, a craft, and deeply relational work. Decades of psychotherapy research confirm that clinical outcomes depend on presence, attuned listening, and relational trust—core competencies nurses practice daily.
Relational Trust is Key
Meta-analyses spanning 30,000+ patients prove that the therapeutic alliance is the single strongest predictor of client recovery—across all modalities.
Presence over Technique
Research shows specific manualized techniques account for only ~1% of therapy success. Empathy, connection, and attuned presence carry the rest.
From Prevention to Relational Repair
Expand upstream health promotion into clinical-grade trauma recovery for families and communities already in your care.
Grounded in Therapeutic Frameworks
Formalize your advanced relational skills into a recognized, regulated psychotherapy practice model.
The First Point of Contact
Turn initial distress encounters into structured, credentialed therapeutic pathways without external referrals.

“Do I need a Master’s degree to practise psychotherapy as a Registered Nurse?”
Not under CNO.Under CRPO — yes, or substantially equivalent.
As a Registered Nurse in Ontario, your authority to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy flows directly from the Regulated Health Professions Act and the Nursing Act—not from a master’s degree. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) does not require a specific additional degree or certification before an RN performs this controlled act. It requires knowledge, skill, and judgement. The Becoming Institute Certificate is the structured, graduate-level program designed to evidence exactly that.
What CNO actually requires of the RN performing psychotherapy.
Under section 33(1) of the Regulated Health Professions Act, the controlled act of psychotherapy is authorized to the nursing profession. Section 15(5) and 15.1(3) of Ontario Regulation 275/95 under the Nursing Act permit Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses to perform — and, since the 2020 amendments, to independently initiate — the controlled act of psychotherapy in community and private settings.
The College of Nurses of Ontario is explicit: there is no CNO-mandated minimum number of training hours, no required certification, no required supervised practicum, and no required additional credential. Authority to perform the controlled act rests on the nurse’s own knowledge, skill, and judgement to provide care safely, effectively, and ethically.
- Knowledge. Graduate-level theory in trauma, neuroscience, attachment, somatic practice, decolonized and culturally-responsive care.
- Skill. Supervised application of evidence-informed psychotherapy modalities with real clients across populations.
- Judgement. Demonstrated clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and reflective practice consistent with the CNO Professional Standards and Code of Conduct.
The Becoming Institute Certificate is built around these three pillars. 1,737.5 hours of integrated didactic instruction, in-person retreats, supervised practicum, and reflective lab work — all designed to give the practising RN a defensible, documented record of competence in the controlled act of psychotherapy.
Two regulators. Two lawful pathways. One program.
Some nurses choose to practise solely as RN–Psychotherapists under their CNO license. Others pursue dual credentialing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Becoming Institute is intentionally designed to serve both.
Practise as an RN–Psychotherapist.
No additional registration required. Your CNO license already authorizes the controlled act. Becoming Institute evidences the knowledge, skill, and judgement CNO expects you to hold.
Add the Registered Psychotherapist title.
CRPO requires master’s-level psychotherapy education — or a program deemed substantially equivalent. Becoming Institute is built to that bar: 1,737.5 program hours, with embedded direct-contact and supervision hours.
Three years. Generalist curriculum. Built for a non-clinical entrant.
Twelve months. Specialist curriculum. Built for the experienced nurse.
What this means for the practising nurse. Your CNO license already authorizes you to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. What CNO asks of you is competence — the knowledge, skill, and judgement to deliver care safely, effectively, and ethically. The Becoming Institute Certificate is the structured, graduate-level program that documents that competence, and positions you to add the Registered Psychotherapist title with CRPO if and when you choose.
You are not starting over. You are building specialist scope on top of a clinical foundation you have already earned.
We are not training nurses to manage symptoms. We are preparing a generation of clinicians to end the loop—for themselves, for their patients, and for the communities Canada has underserved for too long.
