About the Better Health Program (BHP)

The Better Health Program is an innovative initiative developed by the Becoming Institute to support nurses in managing the unique challenges of their profession, particularly those related to mental health and well-being. Recognizing the critical need for specialized care for healthcare professionals, BHP offers a structured yet flexible approach to personal and professional recovery.

Duration

The program spans 16 weeks and is designed to fit into the busy schedules of nursing professionals without compromising their work and personal commitments.

Modules

The program includes 4 tailored modules that include stress management and the restoration of a strong sense of safety, 7 psychotherapeutic sessions to support emotional healing and mindfulness, a 3-day retreat focused on resilience training, and 7 group coaching sessions to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Support System

BHP provides a robust support system consisting of professional counsellors and RN-psychotherapists who specialize in trauma recovery, peer support, and a wrap-around process that links you with a team of practitioners who holistically treat burnout, mental illness, and a variety of trauma responses, especially to unresolved childhood trauma.

Voluntary Participation

Unlike programs that nurses might be mandated to attend due to professional issues, BHP offers a voluntary, non-punitive approach, emphasizing choice and confidentiality.

Designed by Nurses for Nurses

Our program is designed by experienced healthcare professionals who understand the nuances of nursing. This insider perspective ensures that the strategies and support provided are relevant and practically applicable.

Holistic Approach

We believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. BHP integrates physical, emotional, and psychological wellness into one comprehensive program.

BHP is committed to empowering nurses to take charge of their health and well-being through education, support, and personal growth. By participating in BHP, nurses not only enhance their ability to care for themselves but also improve their capacity to provide the best care for their patients.

Our Philosophy

At the Better Health Program (BHP), our philosophy is deeply rooted in the principles of Ubuntu, which asserts, “I am because we are.” This philosophy underscores the profound interconnectedness of all individuals, emphasizing that each person’s well-being is intrinsically linked to the collective health of the community. It guides every aspect of our program—from individual treatment to community engagement, ensuring a comprehensive approach to healing that honors both collective and individual journeys.

We believe that healing is not a solitary endeavor but a communal journey that thrives on mutual support and deep, empathetic connections. The recovery of one nurse enhances the well-being of all, emphasizing that our program is not just about overcoming personal challenges but about fostering a supportive environment that promotes collective resilience and wellness.
BHP empowers nurses by equipping them with knowledge about the nature of stress, trauma, and recovery. Understanding these elements transforms the healing process from one of passive receipt of care to active engagement in recovery. This empowerment is crucial in restoring agency and promoting sustained wellness.
Our holistic approach addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health. We recognize that these aspects are interconnected, and effective healing must consider the whole person. This method allows for a more nuanced and effective treatment plan that is tailored to the unique needs of each nurse.
The field of health care, particularly mental health, is ever-evolving. BHP commits to continuous learning and adaptation of the latest research and best practices in nurse wellness and recovery. This commitment ensures that our program remains relevant and effective, providing the best possible support for nurses.
Every nurse comes from a unique background and has unique needs. Our program respects these differences and tailors recovery approaches accordingly. By honoring each nurse’s individual journey, we foster an environment of respect and inclusivity.
We focus on developing sustainable wellness practices that nurses can continue beyond the program. This approach ensures that the benefits of the BHP extend into all areas of a nurse’s life, promoting long-term health and resilience.

Participant Responsibilities

Participation in the Better Health Program (BHP) is an opportunity to embark on a transformative journey of healing and growth. The success of this journey depends on your commitment to the process and your openness to engaging fully in the program. Here’s how you can make the most of your experience:

Be Open and Honest:

Vulnerability is the cornerstone of healing. Share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences honestly with your therapist and within group sessions. This level of openness can lead to deeper insights and transformative breakthroughs. For example, participants who have shared their past challenges with honesty often report significant progress in their healing journeys.

Set Clear Goals:

At the start of the program, you’ll have the opportunity to identify up to five personal goals in your intake form. These goals will help guide the therapeutic process and keep the focus on what matters most to you. For example, participants who set specific objectives, such as improving coping skills or enhancing emotional resilience, often see tangible improvements in these areas by the end of the program.

Embrace Feedback and Growth Opportunities:

Therapy can sometimes challenge you to confront difficult emotions or beliefs. Being open to constructive feedback and willing to explore discomfort as part of the process can lead to profound growth. Participants who lean into this discomfort often discover new strengths and experience meaningful personal development.

Engage Actively in the Process:

Your full participation in therapy sessions, workshops, and group coaching is essential for success. Show up ready to engage, reflect, and apply what you learn to your daily life. The more you invest in the process, the more you will benefit from it.

Collaborate on Your Healing Journey:

View the program as a partnership between you and your therapist or facilitators. By maintaining open communication, seeking support when needed, and sharing feedback, you contribute to a collaborative environment that fosters personalized care and effective outcomes.

Celebrate Progress and Stay Committed:

Success is built on consistent effort. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, and stay committed to your goals. Each step forward, whether through a new coping strategy or an emotional breakthrough, is a testament to your dedication to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

How the Better Health Program Works

The Better Health Program (BHP) is a 16-week journey designed to guide you through healing, growth, and transformation. Each phase builds on the last, helping you regain balance, find relief, and take charge of your health and well-being. Here’s how it works:

Phase 1: Preparing for Healing (5 Days)

Your journey begins with five days of focused preparation using the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). SSP is a gentle, science-backed therapy that uses specially filtered music to calm your nervous system and help you feel more balanced. This phase gets you ready for the deeper healing work to come, ensuring that your mind and body are in the best possible state to benefit from therapy.

Phase 2: Transforming Thoughts and Beliefs (7 Weeks)

In this phase, you’ll participate in seven psychotherapy sessions guided by the Becoming Method™. These sessions use conscious forgiveness—a proven technique for addressing and releasing negative thoughts and false beliefs. By letting go of emotional burdens, you’ll begin to heal and transform how you see yourself and your life. Conversations with your therapist are protected under professional confidentiality guidelines. No details from your sessions will be disclosed without your explicit consent, except in cases where disclosure is required by law to prevent harm to you or others.

Phase 3: Empowering Self-Healing (3 Days)

This phase is a powerful three-day retreat where you’ll learn the Becoming Method™ yourself. By understanding and practicing the method, you’ll gain the tools to take control of your healing journey. Many participants describe this retreat as one of the most life-changing parts of the program, as it provides lasting skills for personal growth and resilience.

Phase 4: Sustaining Your Results (7 Weeks)

The final phase focuses on maintaining the progress you’ve made. Over seven weeks, you’ll receive coaching on health and work-life balance, helping you integrate the changes into your daily life. These sessions provide practical strategies and ongoing support to ensure your results are lasting and meaningful.

A Life-Changing Experience

The 16-week Better Health Program is designed to help you feel more empowered, balanced, and in control of your life. By the end of the program, many participants report experiencing profound changes in how they think, feel, and approach their personal and professional lives.
